Okay so I’ve had this crap sitting around for forever, they’re some FullMetal Alchemist art books & set up material. All they really do is collect dust these days s I’m just kinda tired of them sitting around. Books 2&3 are in pretty good condition for being used, but the set up…

JesuOtaku’s Top 25 Favorite Anime (#1)

By the time I started watching FMA (at the recommendation of friends) I was already a seasoned anime fan despite only being in middle school at the time. I bought the first DVD and, I’m not kidding, was blown away that the title of the theme was “Melissa,” immediately deciding I was destined to watch it. So while filling in the gaps with DVD purchases and YouTube, I began watching the series on its first run on Adult Swim.

But this went so much deeper than as a common interest in my friend group. This was the first anime I had ever seen with real, emotional depth and complexity. I mean, you can care about the characters in Inuyasha, but there was nothing very real about them. The Elric brothers were REAL brothers on a REAL journey to both atone for their sins and fix their mistakes. Just listen to Jesu on the video, as she explains it well.

Sailor Moon is the anime that defined. It taught me about love and friendship, it influenced my dreams and what I wanted out of life. But, in the end, it was unrealistic. If Sailor Moon lost something, it was easily recovered. There wasn’t much in the way of consequence.

Not so in FMA. It forced me to face a lot of harsh truths for my own good. I have very distinct, powerful memories of certain moments in this series, and not for the reasons you’d think. For example, “The Philosopher’s Stone,” specifically when Ed breaks down over the thought that he had almost been murdered. That scene was so strong that it made me realize my own mortality and, at 13, that’s an incredibly heavy, frightening subject to have to deal with, but from then on, I could no longer hide from the thought. The disclaimer before the first airing of the last episode, usually just a simple few words, was a paragraph long warning from Adult Swim about how graphic the images we were about to see were. My heart literally stopped while reading it, and I was absolutely terrifed. Something as small as that made such a physical impact on me, and nothing like it has ever happened since.

All in all, I appreciate everything FMA taught me and helped me get through. The absolute love I have for this series still even surprises myself sometimes. Just the first few words of Al’s monologue at the beginning of this video made me burst into tears, and I had to choke back sobs the entire four minutes through. It’s incredible how much this series means to me and I really think everyone should watch it.

I remember when I was first watching JesuOtaku’s top 25 countdown. She reviewed past Wolf’s Rain, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop; all which I knew were her top favorites and when she got to one, I was confused.

me: Hmmm, I what could it be?

video: “Humankind cannot learn anything-“

me:

I vaguely knew she liked it because she had alluded to it in other reviews, but… well if you know JesuOtaku reviews, even if she only mentions something, she goes into great detail about it and now I got a mini-review of my favorite series at the time. GLEE.

Also I’m way excited that she’s doing FMA as her 50th review, so you’re totally going to see me post it here when it’s up.
